During winter months fish, frogs and snails need an adequate oxygen supply. Toxic gases caused by decompostion of organic matter combined with total ice cover can be stressful, if not fatal to your fish. Never break the ice cover as the shock waves can cause damage and even death to fish. See Overwintering your Fish. Aerators are often used with De-icers to increase oxygen levels during winter months.

Increased oxygen levels in the pond will aid in the biological breakdown of organic debris in the pond. Improved water quality will also benefit the health of Koi and goldfish. This is especially important if the pond is overstocked and also during periods of hot, humid weather. Aerators can also be used to prevent icing over in winter by keeping airstone closer to surface. Extra weather protection is necessary for both units. Do not make cover airtight.
